What Can Gynecomastia Surgery Address?
Excess Fat in the Chest
Excess breast tissue in men is often caused by an increase in fat being stored in the breasts. The excess fat can cause a man’s chest to protrude further than he would like. Even if the man maintains a healthy lifestyle, it is possible for fat to develop throughout the chest.
Sagging Breast Skin
When excess fat and glandular tissue develop in the breasts, it can cause the breasts to sag and create an unflattering appearance. Since men typically want a flat, chiseled chest to show off, a loose and sagging breast appearance can throw off their confidence in their bodies.
Areola Size
As the skin of the breasts stretches because of an increase in fatty breast tissue, the areola can also experience some distortion. The ideal male physique typically has a small, tight nipple-areolar complex on a firm chest, so overly large areolas can be a detriment to a man’s body aesthetic.
Gynecomastia Surgery Techniques
Liposuction
When gynecomastia is caused mainly by excess fatty tissue in the breasts, liposuction alone may be enough to correct the problem. This is only used in cases where the patient has strong skin elasticity, which will allow the skin to shrink after the fat has been removed. Otherwise, the patient may experience sagging of the breast tissue.
Excision
The excision method is used when gynecomastia is a result of excess skin and/or glandular tissue, which cannot be addressed with liposuction. The incisions will differ between patients based on their specific conditions, but incisions are commonly made along the fold of the breast. Enlarged glandular tissue may be removed, and excess skin is then pulled down to create a tighter chest appearance. This technique is also used when the patient requires a reshaping of the areola.
Combination
In severe cases of gynecomastia, excess breast tissue and fat will both be present. When this occurs, both liposuction and excision methods are used to produce an ideal result.
Concerns
Recovery
After your procedure, it is possible that a drainage tube will be placed under the skin to prevent any fluid or blood from collecting. Your wounds will be dressed with bandages, and a compression garment may be applied to prevent swelling. The first three days of your recovery are critical. You should refrain from performing any tasks other than light walking or subtle movements. Most patients are able to return to work within a week of recovery. To ensure a speedy and healthy recovery, you should follow all post-operative directions given to you by Dr. Andreasen.
Scars
Dr. Andreasen does his best to make incisions in the least noticeable places possible. Your scarring will differ based on which techniques were performed and your unique anatomy. To reduce the appearance of the scar, keep it away from sunlight. All scars will fade with time.
Cost
The cost of your gynecomastia surgery will depend on the surgical, facility, and anesthesia fees. You will receive a detailed quote from Dr. Andreasen after your consultation. Qualifying patients are eligible for financing options.
Pain
You may experience minor pain and discomfort after your procedure, but these can all be addressed with over-the-counter or prescription medication.
